Throwback Thursday: Vintage 58s

It's been too long since I've shown off some true vintage (pre60s) on my page.

I managed to grab the above 8 cards I needed for my Topps Flagship sets for $4.90 delivered.  In addition to the 8 cards above I also grabbed Gene Freese, Frank Thomas, Dick Groat, and Buddy Pritchard in the same lot.  None of these cards are museum worthy, but for the price I just couldn't resist adding more vintage cards to the collection.

I went to Virginia Beach and all I got were these old pieces of cardboard...

Last week, my girlfriend and I were traveling to North Carolina to see Luke Bryan and Lee Brice perform.  It was my Valentine's Day gift to her and I made sure we had really good seats (6 rows from the stage to be exact).  On our way down, she told me to google to see what card shops we may hit in Virginia Beach since she wanted to go to a Western Wear country store anyway.  We decided to hit up Heroes Sports Cards & Collectibles before they closed up for the day.

I'm not going to lie, I was very hesitant to stop in and check it out since we were on a time restraint, but I sure am glad we did.

Within a few minutes of walking around, I found the vintage section of the store.  I pulled out my phone and loaded my vintage want list from the website.  I hit a homerun on the 1960 needs.  I was able to add 11 new cards to the collection, allowing my needs to drop to only 7 cards for that team set.  1960 is one of my favorite vintage sets so grabbing this many cards including the high number Paul Giel really helped make the trip worth it.

Above are the rookie cards for Manuel Javier and Jim Umbricht along with the Pirates coaches card from the 1960 set.

I also picked up a single 1961 Topps card I needed for my set.  This card commemorates Bill Virdon's great catch in game 1 of the 1960 World Series when the Pirates won 6-4 over the Yankees.

Here's the back of the card with the highlights for the game.

Most of the cards I grabbed were in the $4-$6 range, the lone exception being the High Number Paul Giel, which ran me a little more than the price of a discount blaster.

You Complete Me: 1972 Topps

My brother got me several hands full of Pirates Topps baseball cards from 1954-1973 for Christmas and I have finally gotten around to crossing off the cards I needed from my Topps Flagship needs.

Amongst the 44 cards were several 1972 Topps I needed including two of the most beloved Bucs of all time, Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell.

The cards are all in fairly well condition.  They all have soft edges, but with the exception of the Clemente they have no noticable creases.  All worthy of going into the binder and stored safely.

With the addition of the high numberes Davalillo, Virdon, and Hebner along with the 2 Stargells, Roberto Clemente, and In Action Bob Robertson I can now cross these off my needs.  This marks another Goal of 2014 complete and we are only a few days into the new year.

Some more vintage needs crossed off

I recently grabbed 9 of my Topps Vintage Needs.  The cards ranged in years and all 9 were acquired for the low price of $19.  Just over $2 a card to help me complete my Topps team sets.

Huge chunk of 1962 Topps Pickups

As you all know I am trying to complete the flagship base Topps Pirates team sets dating back to 1952.  You can see my vintage needs here if you would like to help me.

At a recent mall card show I managed to grab 8 Pirates from the 1962 set.  These cards ranged in price from $1 - $4.  I'm now 10 cards away from completing the 1962 team set.
